School to Career Calendar of Events
Hunt Valley Rotary Internship Network Partnership
Internship Program: The Internship program is primarily a one semester (two with special permission and second career option) , 2 credit Honors program designed for individuals pursuing a career that requires 4 years plus, post high school graduate education. There is a weekly seminar during enrichment hour where students receive assignments and discuss issues. Students will develop a portfolio and maintain weekly journals and reflective writings.
Work Experience Program: The Work Experience Program is an option available to ALL students interested in a junior or senior year experience that supports their in-school academic preparation for the world of work. The junior year work experience program MAY be an all year program (2 credits) or second half year program (1 credit). The flexibility in the junior year is due to the fact that it is NOT a completer program at this level. Students MUST participate in the first "pathway" course preparing them with the knowledge and skills required to prepare for the college and the world of work-seeking, finding and keeping a job. The class Career Research and Development is ideal for those students who wish to explore through self-assessment, career research and real life financial and time management. For student safety, and county insurance policy, students UNDER the age of 16 must work volunteer for credit until their 16th birthday.
Requirements: 1. Seniors in the Work Experience Program MUST be a part of the STC COMPLETER PROGRAM. This is a FOUR CREDIT experience- two, one credit classes taken any time between 10th through 12th grade (Career Research & Development and Career Development, Preparation and Transition) AND a two credit Work-Based Learning Experience in the community (junior and/or senior year). Successful completion of this program will earn the student the completer status necessary for graduation OR provide the student with the Career and Technology or Academic completer, a SECOND completer AND REAL LIFE experience to take into life or college post high school. Successful completion (3.0 and above) will earn students articulation credit at any of the Community Colleges of Baltimore County.
2. All students interested in any School to Career program MUST complete an application-guidance or STC office, contact the teacher/coordinator and set up a home visit conference in order to be considered for ANY program. The coordinators discuss the Career Options, appropriate placements, and complete ALL documents related to safety and liability necessary for out of school placement of students in an academic/work site BCPS program. This also includes a written statement related to the student's purpose for entering the program AND a resume.
Services Provided: The School to Career department also coordinates the Career Shadow Day (February-usually Ground Hog Day) for the entire school. This is a "snapshot" experience for students to examine areas of career interest before investing time, energy and college/post high school dollars in pursuit of a career. A student may participate FOUR times in their high school career at Hereford. The student MUST apply. The School to career coordinators contact host sites for approval. The day missed from school does not count against attendance AND the student may choose to earn student service credit hours. There is a packet that the student must complete for verification of attendance and participation.
The School to Career department (coordination and implementation) and English department (resume, cover letter, transcript) provide the required Senior Interview experiences (one in the fall and one in the spring) for all seniors at Hereford High School. The coordinators conduct information and preparation sessions for the seniors and organize according to student interest a one-on-one interview with a business partner. Students are required to develop their resume, a cover letter, be prepared to discuss their transcript and related experiences that support their interest. The students are also to "dress for success" in this experience.
The Maryland Business Round Table: The Maryland Business Round Table is an experience provided for students in the ninth grade. The School to Career coordinator connects businesses in the community to the school by providing presentations to the students in the science classes regarding career preparation and career choice.
