Hereford Philosophical Society

Sponsors: Mrs. Trebilcock

The Hereford Philosophical Society grew out of the interest of students in discussing philosophical questions in an environment without the expectations of a formal course. Students have developed a discussion format and a set of guidelines for the discussions. The discussions are planned and led by students; they write questions and look up quotes or brief readings on the topic of the week to challenge different viewpoints. The students also publicize the meetings of the Society through announcements and posters. As the end of each meeting of the Society, the topic of discussion is reviewed and topics for future discussions are considered.

Some topics that have been discussed are:

What is philosophy? Why is there philosophy? Why do we ask questions?
What is violence? Is violence always bad?
What is truth? What are lies? Is there anything in between the two?
What is the relationship between the mind, the heart, and the brain?
What is the role of religion in peace and war?
What is free will? Do we have it?

The Society has met on Thursdays this year, alternating meetings for planning with the open "Socrates Cafe" discussion brownbag meetings. Sponsor is Mrs. Trebilcock, in room 216.
