Peer Helpers/Mediators

Peer Helpers are students who have a strong desire to help other students. They participate in training to improve communication skills so they are prepared to listen carefully and respond appropriately when other students talk to them about problems. They also learn about teen issues such as depression, eating disorders, self-injury, and substance abuse so they have accurate information to share with peers. They become familiar with when a situation is dangerous enough that they need to make a referral to one of the counselors.

Some Peer Helpers have received additional training in mediation. When two students are having a disagreement, one of their options is to ask for a peer mediation. When that happens, two Peer Mediators meet with the students to discuss the issue and help resolve the conflict. Though help from adults is readily accessible, no adult is present in the room when the mediation takes place.
